Islam Makhachev is a Russian professional MMA fighter and current UFC Welterweight Champion, ranked #1 pound-for-pound in the world. Born October 27, 1991, in Makhachkala, Dagestan, he is a combat sambo world champion and multiple-time Russian national champion who turned professional in 2010. Trained under the guidance of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov — father of Khabib — Makhachev captured the UFC Lightweight title at UFC 280 in October 2022 by submitting Charles Oliveira, then defended it four times including two victories over Alexander Volkanovski. He vacated the lightweight belt in May 2025 to move up to welterweight, winning the UFC Welterweight title at UFC 322 by defeating Jack Della Maddalena — becoming just the eleventh simultaneous double champion in UFC history.
